Lot Description:

For auction is a genuine piece of American history—a Perpetual Fire Insurance policy dated July 23, 1852, issued by the Fire Association of Philadelphia. This rare document, Policy No. 1912/1, was underwritten for Arthur Ginn, with a premium of $1000 at a 2% rate, equaling $20. The artifact is in remarkable condition given its age, with expected signs of wear such as slight discoloration, creases, and edge wear that add to its historical character.

Both the external and internal details of this document are preserved well enough to read the printed and handwritten information, including the terms and conditions, policy number, amount, and date. The Fire Association's emblem, a fire hydrant, is prominently displayed, indicative of the era's insurance branding. The policy's transfer section provides a fascinating glimpse into the 19th-century practice of policy assignment and reassignment, listing multiple historical signatures and annotations.

This document not only represents an individual's safeguard against the all-too-common fires of the era but also serves as a tangible connection to the early days of the American insurance industry. Such a piece could serve as a prized possession for collectors of financial, insurance, historical documents, or Philadelphia memorabilia. It's also an educational artifact that could be used as a teaching tool for those studying 19th-century American urban life or the history of commerce.

Condition: Used - with all materials showing appropriate signs for their age, including wear, foxing, and fold marks.

If the reserve is lowered after the auction closes, the highest bidder at auction close will receive a winning bidder invoice.
