Buying Furniture at auction

Looking to buy furniture at an online auction near you?

Online estate and household auctions are exploding across the country. As the baby-boomer generations start to downsize and retire, there is a ton of used furniture hitting the market. Buyers are seeing huge opportunities to scoop up great deals on furniture, housewares, furnishings and much more. We’ve put together some quick tips if you’re looking to get involved in an online auction near you.

  • Size is everything. - Know the dimensions you want and need. Check the auction description and pictures to verify the dimensions are included. If dimensions are not included in the description or in the pictures provided, ask the auction company for more information prior to bidding.

  • Don’t assume. - Unsure if an item is veneer or solid wood? Are there any markings or a brand name on the piece? These are questions you should ask prior to bidding. Not every auction company has the full history on each piece and it’s a good idea to check it out yourself rather than make assumptions. Most online auctions will have an inspection period where you can physically check out the item before the auction ends.

  • Bring help for removal. - Winning bidders are usually responsible for picking up the items at the auction location. Some auction companies will provide assistance for loading your items, however many will not have the staff available. It’s best to verify this prior to bidding and to make sure you have the necessary help to get your new furniture into your vehicle.

  • Speaking of vehicles…. - Bring the appropriate vehicle or trailer! Make sure the items you’re bidding on can fit into your vehicle. The last thing you want is to have to make two trips.

  • Understand the removal terms. - Many online auctions have specific removal date and time that buyers are expected to come and pick up their items. These dates are rarely negotiable as many times the auction company is working in tight deadlines. Verify that you are available and can make the stated removal times.

  • Check out shipping options. - Shipping used furniture is an expensive ordeal. The free shipping you receive on new furniture is typically built into the retail price you pay. Safely securing, wrapping, and shipping larger furniture can cost you hundreds of dollars. The auction company should provide information on their shipping process and if it’s available. Some might have connections with local movers that you can hire as well.

  • Set your budget. - Know what you can and cannot afford or are willing to spend. It’s easy to get caught up in the frenzy of bidding during the close of an online auction. Setting a budget early and sticking to it is the best way to not overextend yourself.

  • Ask questions. - If you’re new to online auctions and have questions, do not be afraid to reach out for clarification. Auction companies want and need your business and should be available to help you out and make you comfortable with the bidding process.

  • These tips should help you get started in the exciting world of online auctions. If you’re looking for auctions in your area, thousands of pieces of furniture are sold each year on K-BID.com.
