Lot Description:

Large Orthoceras Fossil Bowl / Decorative Dish – Polished Fossil Stone – Approx. 11 in Diameter

An impressive decorative bowl carved from fossil-rich Orthoceras stone, showcasing dozens of ancient marine fossils preserved within polished black limestone. Orthoceras were straight-shelled cephalopods that lived in prehistoric oceans roughly 400 million years ago during the Ordovician period, long before the age of dinosaurs.

This substantial specimen has been expertly carved and polished into a large shallow bowl or dish, revealing numerous Orthoceras fossils embedded throughout the stone matrix. The elongated cone-shaped fossils are clearly visible across the interior surface, creating a striking natural pattern that contrasts beautifully against the deep black stone background. Additional smaller fossil inclusions and natural mineral veining add further character and visual interest.

Pieces like this originate primarily from Morocco, where fossil-bearing limestone deposits contain dense concentrations of Orthoceras. When polished and shaped into decorative objects, they become both functional and display-worthy natural history pieces.

With its large size and dramatic fossil display, this bowl makes an exceptional decorative centerpiece, conversation piece, or collector’s item for those interested in paleontology, geology, or unique natural décor.
