After studying Printmaking at the Slade School of Art, Stanley moved to Paris to work at the Ecole de Beaux Arts for a time before moving to the Atelier Patris, Montparnasse. Here he gained much experience in stone and zinc plate lithography and was also fortunate enough to work with artists like Giacometti, Le Moal, Sugaii, Severini and Soulages etc.. In 1958 Robert Erskine persuaded him to return to London to help set up the Curwen Print Studio, at the same time he took up a position at the Slade School to lecture in Printmaking.
Stanley’s whole life has been devoted to printmaking; in particular the art of lithography and over the years it became more apparent to him that there was a need for a central educational establishment to continue the varied methods of printmaking skills, before they became lost. This encouraged him to establish the Curwen Print Study Centre. The centre, located alongside the Curwen Studio at Chilford, offers facilities for all forms of printmaking for all abilities from 7 years old upwards.
