This lot consists of 1 fold (herd) of Scottish Highland cattle located in Delano, Minnesota. These cattle have been raised organically and are primarily grass fed with some grain. Included in the fold are 1 mature bull, 5 mature cows, 5 heifers, 3 two-year-olds, 2 bull calves and 2 heifer calves. One of the cows is in the late stages of pregnancy and is expected to deliver a calf in the coming weeks. High bidder receives the entire fold plus newborn calf (if applicable at the time of the sale).
The meat tends to be leaner than most beef because Highlands get most of their insulation from their thick shaggy hair rather than subcutaneous fat. The coat makes them a good breed for cold northern climates and they are able to thrive in outdoor conditions that would defeat most other breeds of domestic beef cattle. As such, Highland cattle are able to produce beef at a reasonable gross margin from inhospitable land that would otherwise normally be incapable of rendering a profit agriculturally.
High bidder of these cattle will need to pick-up the fold before November 1. These Highlanders are very docile and are in a nine acre pasture.
***UPDATE*** Not one but TWO calves were born on 10/20. Believed to both be heifers. They are included in this lot.
Cattle need to be removed by November 1st, 2014.
