We are honored to offer the gem of the sale: a legendary 10th - 12th century Viking sword (measures 36") that was unearthed in near Tallinn, Estonia in a rare Viking dig a year ago.  As you can imagine, finding a Viking sword (along with other Viking artifacts like jewelry, axes, spear tips, fishing hooks; some of which are offered in this auction) is a find of a lifetime, but to find a complete sword from pommel to tip is nothing short of legendary.

This is the type of item that one can only see in a specialized museum or in photos, but now you have the remarkable opportunity to bid and win this rich treasure.  We have been told that genuine examples are very hard to acquire as these are no longer available for sale/export from Scandinavian countries and most digs dry up quickly and are consumed by private collector's and museums very quickly.

This article gives a full and detailed history of the Viking Sword; truly a marvel of craftsmanship for it's day: http://www.hurstwic.org/history/articles/manufacturing/text/viking_sword.htm

ONE-OF-A-KIND scratch-built model of the famous Viking ship Oseberg, 4 feet 4 inches long, 12 inches wide and 30 inches tall in a custom Plexiglas display case.  The wooden ship is named the WHITE RAVEN, or “HVIT RAVNR” in Old Norse and took over 300 hours for the master craftsman to build.  The cloth sail is hand-stitched and is a circa-correct rendition of a white raven.  Authentic Old Norse artwork also decorates the 30 hand-painted shields that line the gunnel rails.

An elaborate dragon’s head accents the bow, with purple and blue colors indicating royalty, as only the richest Vikings had quantities of these dye colors derived from rare shellfish.  The gilded wings of the elaborate dragon’s head set off a magnificent ship with hull lines faithful to the Oseberg, and when viewed from the front, the accurate lines of the masterful Viking ship are spectacular.  A dragon’s tail completes the classic lines of this artful craft.

The Plexiglas case is 56” L x 16” W x 33” H.  The Oseberg model and display case are of strict Museum Quality.

Auction Estimate: $3000 - $6000

History of the Oseberg Burial Ship

The famous Norwegian Viking ship, the Oseberg ship, was built in AD 820, buried in a grave mound 14 years later, and excavated in 1904.

The burial mound consisted of an astonishingly well-preserved Viking ship that contained the remains of two women along with a wide array of accompanying grave goods. This vessel, which is widely celebrated as one of the finest finds of the Viking Age, had been buried within a large mound or haugr.

The burial mound measured approximately 40m long by 6.5m high and it completely covered the boat. The conditions within the mound were particularly damp and this meant that the ship and its contents survived nearly intact. Constructed primarily out of oak planks, the vessel measured 21.40m long by 5.10m wide. Its bow and stern were covered in elaborate carvings, while it contained 15 pairs of oar holes which meant up to 30 men could row the ship as required.

Centrally placed on the ship were the skeletons of two women whose remains had been placed in a specially built wooden tent. One of the woman was in her eighties and this was reflected in the condition of her bones which showed that she had suffered badly from arthritis during her final years. The second woman was younger and had died in her early fifties. The connection between the two women is unclear; it is possible that they were related or more sinisterly represent the remains of a noble woman interred with her sacrificed slave. Indeed, some have speculated that one of the women may be Queen Åsa, the grandmother of Norway’s first king.  Radiocarbon analysis of the women’s bones indicated that they died c. 1220±40 and 1230±40.

Rare in the fact that the original leather is complete and still attached.  A very nice example of an authentic civil war officer's sword with excellent engraving work on each side of the blade: one side "US" with the other "E. Pluribus Unum" (out of many, one).  Also, either the maker or the officer's name or some other information is etched on the top of the blade near the cross guard (see photos).

The scabbard also has some nice etching on the brass fittings.  Being offered with no reserve.

Drummer boys and other musicians were critical for calling out commands and signals, keeping up soldier morale, and assisting medics on the battlefield and camp.  Often times these were younger boys around 12 years of age as the older boys would be assisting with the warfare directly.  Having said that, the drummer boys would still be armed.

Up for bid is this Hortmann's of Philadephia signed civil war musician's sword.  These are smaller than the typical sword because, as we mentioned, it was often utilized by young boys as a last line of defense.

This one comes with its 9/10th complete original scabbard (the tip is missing).  A great piece of American history!

If the reserve is lowered after the auction closes, the highest bidder at auction close will receive a winning bidder invoice.    Once an auction begins its closing process, outbid notifications will not be sent.

Auction House can ship any item(s) that will fit into a 12" x 12" x 8" (or smaller) box and weighs under 50 pounds.  A $10 packing materials & handling/hauling fee is added to the actual shipping cost (check www.usps.com under "Calculate a Price").

Auction House can ship either Spee-Dee or USPS (we cannot ship Fed-Ex or UPS).  Larger items (such as furniture) can be shipped via a third party company.  Call for details before bidding if you are considering having a large item shipped as the cost can be quite substantial.

If you purchase a number of items then multiple 12" x 12" x 8" boxes (or smaller) can be used.  There is a $10 per box fee + actual shipping costs per box.

Priority Mail comes with tracking & $50 insurance.  If more insurance is needed then the buyer must pay for the auction cost of the additional insurance.  Auction House is not liable for lost/damaged items once the item has been dropped off at USPS & given a tracking number beyond the scope of  what USPS insurance policy and what the USPS will cover.

Packing the boxes for item safety is per the discretion of the Auction House.

Large items can be hired out to various carriers for hire.  Contact us for details before bidding.
