Lot Description:

Vintage Very Collectable Hasbro Monopoly Lionel Trains Post-War Era Board Game

If you're a model train enthusiast, a collector of postwar memorabilia, or simply love classic board games, the Lionel Collector's Edition Post-War Era Monopoly set would make an excellent addition to your collection. This item is the same as the original Monopoly board game with the same rules and conditions. The aesthetics of the game, however, have received a Lionel train-themed facelift. For example, the eight familiar die-cast tokens, including the thimble and dog, have been replaced with six pewter figures that resemble Lionel trains. With this set, the design emphasis has been placed on the details. The play money has been replaced with replicas of actual vintage Lionel stock certificates, and the Chance and Community Chest cards are re-imagined as Crossing Gate and Banjo Signal cards. Even the Monopoly board game rulebooks are re-titled as Operator's Manuals. Each section of the manual explains details about the new imagery on the playing surface. The biggest design change, however, is on the playing surface of the game itself. Each familiar element of the original board game has been replaced with another element based on the Lionel train company. The color-coded properties have been replaced by types of post-war railway carriers that you can purchase to "corner the market" on that model or make trades that are more advantageous later. The low-rent purple properties just past GO are now cabooses, and high-end Park Place and Boardwalk have been replaced by a Savings car and a Mint car, which transport money and valuables. Some of the other categories include freight, animal, and military cars. The former Monopoly railroad blocks, including B & O and Reading Railroad, have been renamed after maintenance and weighing vehicles. The little green houses have been replaced with white gateman’s housing, and the red hotels are now green railway stations. The playing surface measures 19 inches wide by 19 inches high. The game board is packaged folded in half in its box. The entire package with game board, tokens, and accessories weighs 1.9 pounds. The level of detail extends to the six game tokens, which are scale model trains that are approximately 1 inch long. They have been painstakingly crafted and die-cast to look like classic Lionel engines. The names of each engine are stamped on the bottom of the matching tokens. They include the iconic Hudson, the Norfolk & Western "J" class, and the General, which is one of the first steam engines. It's even mounted on an old-fashioned three-rail base. This board game is suitable for two or more players, and the recommended age is 8 years and up. This delightful Monopoly collector's edition, which ceased production in 2000, was made possible by the merger of General Mills, owner of Lionel Trains, and Parker Brothers toys, owner of Monopoly. Both companies commemorated their merger through the marriage of two iconic symbols of Americana. The result was this Lionel Monopoly Collector's Edition Post-War game.
