A substantial and stunning bronze sculpture of a Native woman by Navajo artist Larry Yazzie. Signed by the artist, #9/30. Looking skyward, her face is in excellent proportion, detailed colors in her necklace and the binder of the feathers she holds. The reverse of the sculpture is an intricately cast eagle's head, with intensive eyes and a sharp raptor's beak. This heavy piece sits on an elegant wood base which has a rotating table underneath, allowing for easy turning and inspection. This gallery-worthy piece is in pristine condition. Dimensions: 7.25"w x 14" d x 18.5" tall.
Artist quote "My wife's grandmother told me a story about a chanting ceremony that the the Navajo people use to call the eagles. She told me this ceremony does not exist any more. This sculpture is to remember that time."
Larry Yazzie was born on the Navajo reservation in 1958. Larry spent many hours in his grandmother's hogan. His father was learning to be a medicine man like his grandfather and great-grandfather, when he passed away unexpectedly. While he was still a young child, his mother remarried an ordained minister from the Northwest Coast and the family moved to Washington state. A Swedish man had adopted his stepfather and Larry would listen to his stories of the "old country". "I accepted this non-Native elder as my grandfather." Larry explained, "At an early age, I experienced cultures other than just Navajo or Indian, and it gave me an openness towards all people - an openness to discovering our similarities, not just our differences."
He studied art at Peninsula College in Port Angeles, WA before being accepted at the Institute of American Indian Art (IAIA) in Santa Fe, where he moved from painting to sculpture and discovered his creative connection with the spirit of the stones. He graduated from IAIA with honors in 1985.
