St. Louis Park, MN
These two hand colored etchings are printed from plates made circa 1750 for publisher John Bowles. Yellowing has occurred on the artwork and their mats, but the artwork is in good condition within the frames, given their age. The first piece may have slipped a bit in its frame. The pieces are framed identically in wood frames with gold and silver finishes, size 19" x 23.5". Mild chipping on each frame at the sides, see photos. There is a stain on the first print in the lower right corner, and on the mat of the 2nd piece, in the lower left.

Ranelagh Gardens was one of several pleasure gardens in London, and opened in 1741. Its principal attraction was a heated rotunda designed by William Jones, modelled on the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople. The print shows the central fireplace with revelers eating their breakfast around it, and the dais holding musicians to the left with a large organ. The rotunda helped make Ranelagh more popular than its rival in Vauxhall, which had no indoor concert area. Ranelagh also had a better reputation, because the entry fee was higher at two shillings and sixpence, attracting a smarter clientele. The Gardens often hosted famous visiting musicians, including the young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1764.
John Bowles (1701?-1779) Print publisher, younger son of Thomas Bowles I, and brother of Thomas Bowles II. While Thomas II took on the family business, John set up his separate print shop c.1723 at Mercers' Hall, Cheapside, London. By 1733 was trading (also?) at the sign of the Black Horse, Cornhill. John's career can be followed through eight catalogues that he published between 1728 and 1768. The last is no less than 167 pages long.
