Lot Description:

Awaji Doll by grounndbreaker Kiyoshi Saitō (Japan, 1907-1997). Original Japanese sōsaku-hanga color woodblock print on heavy Japanese paper, circa early 1960s. Signed in black ink by the artist and bearing the artist's red chop mark. Unlimited edition. Female Awaji doll (bunraku theater) puppet in profile, as part of Saitō's 1957 "Doll Awaji" series named after the Japanese island of Awaji and featured in many museums.

  • Saitō did not number this print, but he was particular about authoring a work from design and carving through printmaking, and the placement of his signature differs slightly from print to print. This vintage print is housed in a rather inferior silver-toned metal frame, with a hand-cut paper matting. The print itself has sharp colors and appears a bit wavy at the top (shown), while the plain-paper light cream matting has a top corner tear and stain (shown). The frame is 19.25" tall x 13.25" wide, with a 8" wide x 14" tall image area that appears to hide a bit of the print. The words "Puppet (2) by Saito" have been pencilled in the lower right matting, with a possible original price in the corner.
  • About the Artist: Kiyoshi Saitō (1907-1997) was born in Fukushima, Japan. He became part of a burgeoning sōsaku-hanga, a "creative prints" movement stressing a printmaker's expression of individuality by drawing, carving and printing works alone, and in 1938 he issued his first woodblock prints in his now famous "Winter in Aizu" series. Saitō was one of two Japanese printmaking artists arising out of this movement to have won at the São Paulo Biennale in 1951, for the first time outperforming Japanese and Western-style paintings, sculpture and avant-garde and vaulting printmaking to artistic heights in Japan. Saitō's early works depict villages populated with local Japanese with a high degree of realism and three-dimensionality. His more mature works merge modern elements with Japanese tradition.
