Penca de Balangandan #2 of 2
This incredible penca de balangandan slave amulet with a brooch back and chain held both universal and personal meanings for the original wearer. The pin is meant to also serve as a pendant, and seven charms are loosely arranged along a sawtooth ridge and flanked by two etched birds.The silverplate charms portion opens at end with an extended push-open clasp. The carved wood "mano figa" lucky fist charm is traditional for these types of amulets but appears newer and bound in silvertone. Other charms include a moon-on-hunting bow, ladle on an extended handle, and hollow gourd-like fruits and vegetables.The 23" chain and 2" x 2.5" long charms portion together weigh 32g. Much tarnish was cleaned from the item, and some remains. This particular chain's thumb catch is functional.
Penca means “bouquet” in Portuguese, and balangandan refers to the jingling sound of its metal charms. The balangandan was used between the 1600s into the 1800s, worn by Brazilian women of African descent. The balangandan most frequently adorned thick chain belts about slaves' waists, or was sometimes attached to the wrist or hung near the door. Originally made of silver, it represented a significant monetary value and was often presented by plantation owners to favoured slaves. Each featured charms significant to the wearer, included dually representative religious symbols for Christian and African gods, or charms for good fortune, happiness, prosperity, or good health, or charms celebrating the survival of misfortune, accident or illness.

Bidder Responsibilities

Compliance & Enforcement
Failure to comply with auction terms, including removal requirements, may result in suspension of bidding privileges.
If bidding privileges are suspended due to unpaid invoices:
Duplicate accounts will be deactivated. Suspected fraudulent activity may result in bid removal, account holds, or permanent suspension. K-BID reserves the right to refuse service to any user and may refer fraudulent behavior to appropriate authorities.
Seller Conduct
Sellers and their agents are strictly prohibited from bidding on their own items.
Sales Tax
Applicable sales tax will be collected by the affiliate managing the auction.
Shipping is available for most reasonably sized items at the cost of shipping in addition to our processing fees. Our processing fee structure is as follows:
*** If you purchase multiple lots/ items and we are able to combine them into one package you will only be charged one processing fee.
AFTER you have paid for your items on K-Bid, a separate invoice for the cost of shipping will be emailed to you with in a week.
We can not ship your items until you have paid your K-Bid invoice.
Shipping fees cannot be calculated in advance as the items have to be packaged and the package weighed and measured before shipping fees can be calculated.
Once the items have been sent to the shipping department and have been packaged for mail and you have been sent an invoice, picking up your item will no longer be an option as time and money will have been spent to package up your item/s. Thank you.
