1918 Liberty Loan Drive Photos - Mary Pickford, Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks, Marie Dressler, more
A page from a young woman's visit to Washington, D.C. in 1918 also contains photographer candids of some major movie stars visiting at the time on their Liberty Loan drive. One one side of the 8.25" x 11" page, which was found under glass and cardboard in the included wood frame, friends Earnestine O'Day and Clifton Peyton pose for each other outdoors and by Union Station in Washington, D.C. in 2.25" x 3" sienna snapshots.
On the other side is a photographer's enlarged, glossy April 1918 7" x 5" candid of silent movie star Mary Pickford accepting something from a soldier while her mother Charlotte looks on. Below that photos is another from that day featuring Canadian stars Marie Dressler, Douglas Fairbanks, Champ Clark, Charles Chaplin, and Mary Pickford, who had all joined forces to sell war bonds (Liberty Loans) at the time. The back of these photos is stamped with a Washington, D.C. photographer's copyright and address (the visit was April 6, 1918).
Marie Dressler's up-and-down career found success in vaudeville and into the talkies with the first feature-length comedy in 1914. Fellow Canadian, silent screen darling and founder of the Motion Picture Academy Mary Pickford became Dressler's good friend. Douglas Fairbanks had not yet become known as the "King of Hollywood" in roles such as Robin Hood, Zorro, and the Thief of Baghdad, and while he was already in love with Mary Pickford, they had not yet married (they divorced spouses in 1920 to marry). Charlotte Pickford was very apprehensive of scandal at the time, and thus decided to chaperone on this drive.
Speaker of the House James Beauchamp (Champ) Clark, a Missouri representative, had defeated the Canadian-American Reciprocity Treaty of 1911 by arguing the two countries needed to stay separate, but in the photo he looks on proudly as these Canadians raise support for U.S. involvement in the world war. Charlie Chaplin had been acting since 1914 and already cultivated his tramp persona, and by 1918 he was well-known around the world.

No refunds will be given for abandoned lots. Customers are responsible to make sure they have all their items before leaving the removal site. ESM is not responsible for items that a customer leaves behind.
Late removals should not be expected. A $25 trip charge per item will be charged to schedule late removals.
By participating in this auction, you release Estate Sales Minnesota of any liability of damage or injury that may occur on the premises of this auction.

This auction is contracted and managed by an independent auctioneer. By placing a bid, you agree to both the auction-specific terms listed on this page and the K-BID User Terms and Agreements.
Platform Role

Bidder Responsibilities

Inspection & Removal
Inspection dates and times are provided for every auction. Bidders are strongly encouraged to inspect items prior to bidding.
Removal day is not an inspection day.
Once an auction closes and an invoice is issued, the winning bidder is obligated to complete the purchase.
Item Condition
All items are sold “as is, where is,” with no guarantees or warranties. Buyers are responsible for their own due diligence.
Buyer’s Premium
If applicable, Buyer’s Premium caps are applied per item, not per invoice.
Auction Process
Compliance & Enforcement
Failure to comply with auction terms, including removal requirements, may result in suspension of bidding privileges.
If bidding privileges are suspended due to unpaid invoices:
Duplicate accounts will be deactivated. Suspected fraudulent activity may result in bid removal, account holds, or permanent suspension. K-BID reserves the right to refuse service to any user and may refer fraudulent behavior to appropriate authorities.
Seller Conduct
Sellers and their agents are strictly prohibited from bidding on their own items.
Sales Tax
Applicable sales tax will be collected by the independent auction company managing the auction.
Shipping is available for most items in the auction for the cost of shipping in addition to our processing fees. Our processing fee structure is as follows:
*** If you purchase multiple lots/ items and we are able to combine them into one package you will only be charged one processing fee.
AFTER you have paid for your items on K-Bid, a separate invoice for the cost of shipping will be emailed to you with in a week.
We can not ship your items until you have paid your K-Bid invoice.
Shipping fees cannot be calculated in advance as the items have to be packaged and the package weighed and measured before shipping fees can be calculated.
Once the items have been sent to the shipping department and have been packaged for mail and you have been sent an invoice, picking up your item will no longer be an option as time and money will have been spent to package up your item/s. Thank you.
