Inuit Artist Helen Kalvak (1901-1984): Vintage Hand Printed Stone Cut Print in Original Folder Circa 1970: "Union of Mankind"
In this original inked stone cut print, Inuit artist Helen Kalvak (1901-1984) illustrates a symbolic scene envisioning the union of all mankind. The caption on the folder reads, "To symbolize the union of all mankind she is showing us here the partaking of the same meal - with men from all the races she knows: Indian, White and Eskimo." Helen led a remarkable life as a traditional nomadic Native Inuit at the turn of the century, and only began her art at the age of 59 when her husband died. She was among the first to document this Native way of life, and was a founding member of the Holman Eskimo Cooperative in 1961.
The piece is printed on a thinner beige paper and shows three human figures eating, in front of a tent-like home. It has never been framed and remains in its original beige folder, which is stamped "Centennial Year of the Northwest Territories". This year was 1970. Inside the folder is the above mentioned caption, and also "Holman - Original Stone Cut Print by Kalvak, Holman NWT". The art is loose and can be slipped out of the folder. Found in a larger folder with other prints, labeled "Centennial Year of the Northwest Territories" (folder included). Please see our photos for additional details.
Condition: Very good condition in original folder
Print Size: 8.25" x 11.25"
About the Artist: Helen Kalvak was born in 1901 in a camp at Tahiryuak Lake. Her father was a respected angakuq [shaman] who passed much of his special knowledge and abilities to his daughter. Following the traditional ways, Kalvak's drawings are rich with the stories that she learned from her parents. Kalvak began drawing using graphite on paper in 1960, shortly after the sudden death of her husband the same year, while she was living at a coastal outpost camp. She portrayed traditional life and dress in these early drawings.
One of the founding members of the Holman drawing and printmaking Co-operative in 1961, initiated by the Oblate missionary Father Henri Tardy, Kalvak's drawings were used for experimental sealskin stencil prints in 1962. Between 1965 and 1985 over 176 of her drawings were translated into stencil and stonecut prints, the largest body of published work by a Holman artist. She created an estimated 2000 drawings between 1962 and 1978 before Parkinson's disease limited the use of her hands.
