Lot Description:

Model: 51 (Also known as a wire recorder)
Serial: 380
115 Volts AC
60 cycles
Made in the USA

-Own a piece of Iowa broadcasting history - a real conversation starter for your collection. This General Electric Magnetic Recorder and Reproducer (WIRE recorder - not tape) came directly from the WOI-TV station.

-The recorder has a metal plate affixed that reads, "WOI, I.S.C., Ames, Iowa." (ISC = Iowa State College). WOI-TV was an early player in television - it went on the air in February 21, 1950 and for several years was the first station in central Iowa to offer a regular schedule of programming. It was the first television station owned and operated by an institution of higher learning - Iowa State University.

-Wire recorders were the predecessor to tape recorders, and their brief heyday lasted only from approximately 1946 to 1954. It is likely that this recorder was at the station on opening day and recorded some of its earliest stories. If not, it would have been purchased within the first couple of years of broadcasting. It may also have been used at WOI radio. The "I.S.C." label absolutely pre-dates 1959 when the "college" was renamed to a "university."
-According to the National Museum of American History website, this recorder was built in 1945.  <http://americanhistory.si.edu/collections/search/object/nmah_1115540>

-It is unknown if the unit is functional; no power cord to be able to test. However, it is possible that it is still functional, because at the time in which these were being disposed of in the early 1990's, several other working pieces were being disposed of, simply because of their age and lack of use at the station.

-Inspections for this auction will be by appt only.  Inspection day is not Pickup day.

-All payments must be made by the end of last scheduled pickup day (Sat, 2/21/15).  If you can not make payment arrangements within this time frame, please refrain from bidding on these items.  As always, if prompt payment is made, other arrangements to pickup items will be allowed.

-Many Items are extremely heavy.  Bring proper help, equipment, and transportation to load / remove items.  Disassembly is the responsibility of the buyer.  A loading dock and forklift are available to assist if needed.

-All descriptions are written to the best of my knowledge.  Visual inspections are always recommended.

-All items are sold AS-IS, WHERE-IS, All sales are final, and there are no warranties.
