THE CONTRACT WITH VJ ALLOWED IT FIRST RIGHTS TO PRINT ANY RECORDS FROM A FOREIGN BAND, AND THUS VJ WAS ACTUALLY THE FIRST AMERICAN RECORD LABEL TO MAKE BEATLE RECORDS A WHOLE YEAR BEFORE CAPITOL RELEASED MEET THE BEATLES. JIM STECK, A RADIO NEWSMAN WITH KRLA IN LOS ANGELES, AND DAVE HULL, A POPULAR DISC JOCKEY WITH THE SAME STATION, EACH CONDUCTED INTERVIEWS WITH THE BEATLES DURING THEIR 1964 AMERICAN TOUR. AFTER PORTIONS OF THESE INTERVIEWS WERE AIRED ON KRLA, VEE-JAY APPROACHED THE PAIR AND REACHED AN AGREEMENT TO RELEASE THE INTERVIEW ON AN ALBUM. IN ORDER TO FLESH OUT A COHESIVE ALBUM, VEE-JAY EMPLOYED THE SERVICES OF RECORD PRODUCER LOU ADLER, WHO EDITED THE INTERVIEWS APPLIED CROWD NOISES, SCREAMS AND PERCUSSION BY HAL BLAINE, A TOP FLIGHT LOS ANGELES SESSION DRUMMER (THE WRECKING CREW).
