He studied art in London at the Royal Academy Schools and exhibited his art throughout Britain for most of the last half of the nineteenth century. Beginning in 1855, Barwell regularly contributed his paintings and etchings to both the British Institute and to the Society of British Artists, London.

F. B. Barwell was a close friend of the great Victorian painter, Sir John Everett Millais, and they shared a studio for some time. During the years some of Frederick Barwells exhibited works of art were praised by the most famous of British art critics, John Ruskin. One reference source also notes that Frederick Barwell held the post of Inspector for London's Schools of Art. *

Frederick Bacon Barwell was a full member of the Junior Etching Club (1857-1864), an institution that greatly contributed to the revival of etching in England. Other members included Sir John Everett Millais, Sir Francis Powell, Henry Moore, Charles Keene, Matthew James Lawless, Walter Severn, Henry Stacy Marks, Frederick Smallfield, Arthur James Lewis William Gale, Joseph Clark, Henry Clarence Whaite and James McNeill Whistler. The Junior Etching Club often published their members etchings and the above artists all contributed to their most important portfolio, Passages from Modern English Poets, printed and published during the years 1861 and 1862. Sea Beach - Norfolk Fisherman on the Look Out (The Fisherman) hails from this famous publication. ......Frederick Bacon Barwell's original etching, Sea Beach - Norfolk Fisherman on the Look Out was created for the 1862 publication, Passages from Modern English Poets Illustrated by the Junior Etching Club. Following the etching was a poem by George Crabbe (1754 - 1832) entitled, The Sea Beach. The closing lines of the poem are provided below: Ships in the calm seem anchored, for they glide
On the still sea urged slowly by the tide;
Art thou not present, this calm scene before,
Where all beside is pebbly length of shore,
And far as eye can reach it can discern no more. * George Crabbe
