**László Mednyánszky: A Master of European Romanticism and Symbolism**
László Mednyánszky (1852–1919) was a Hungarian-born painter whose life and work bridged the cultural and artistic worlds of Central Europe. Born in Beckó, in the Kingdom of Hungary (modern-day Beckov, Slovakia), into a noble family with Hungarian, Polish, and French roots, Mednyánszky's cosmopolitan background profoundly influenced his art. While his early years were shaped by the grandeur of his family’s estates, including the picturesque château of Nagyőr (Strážky), it was his exposure to diverse artistic traditions that defined his career.
Mednyánszky's formal training began at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich and continued at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. However, his restless spirit and dissatisfaction with academic conventions led him to develop an independent artistic voice. Based in Montmartre, Paris's bohemian heart, Mednyánszky cultivated a style that merged Romanticism, Symbolism, and an emotive sensitivity to nature and the human condition.
A tireless traveler, Mednyánszky drew inspiration from the landscapes of Hungary, Slovakia, Italy, and beyond. His works often depicted melancholic scenes, haunting figures, and atmospheric landscapes, embodying a profound sense of spirituality and introspection. The idyllic surroundings of Nagyőr served as a recurring motif, while his exposure to the Szolnok artists' colony and travels to Italy enriched his palette and subject matter.
Despite his reclusive nature, Mednyánszky exhibited his work at major venues, including his celebrated solo exhibition at Galerie Georges Petit in Paris in 1897. Later, his time as a war correspondent during World War I brought a poignant intensity to his art, capturing the human cost of conflict with empathy and depth.
Mednyánszky's personal life was as complex as his art. Openly homosexual in an era of profound conservatism, he maintained a long-term relationship with Bálint Kurdi, a partnership that influenced his artistic explorations of identity and emotion. His life came to a close in 1919 in Vienna, leaving behind a legacy of works that continue to resonate with collectors, scholars, and admirers of European art.
Today, Mednyánszky is celebrated as a visionary painter who merged personal experience with universal themes, creating art that speaks to the resilience of the human spirit and the transcendent beauty of the natural world.

Bidding:
Online bidding only - no advance selling. Auction closing is staggered at 2 lots per minute with a 3-minute extension on competitive bidding. That means if you plan to wait until the last minute to place your bid - another bidder can do the same extending the active bidding out 3 minutes per bid. You must REFRESH the page to see active bidding.
Pick Up:
The buyer is solely responsible for the disassembling, removal, and transportation of all items. We are not responsible for items left behind. Plan and prepare in advance. All items must be removed from the premises during designated time frame. Do not bid on this auction if you are unable to honor the scheduled removal times and day.

No Show:
At the close of the removal, all unpaid invoices will be processed as NO SHOWs and all remaining lots will be considered abandoned and disposed of at the affiliate’s discretion.
No refunds will be given for abandoned lots.
Late Pick Up:
If you request an extension of the removal timeframe to retrieve your items, a $25 service fee will be added to your invoice.
