This antique bolt-action rifle is a historic Carcano model manufactured in Brescia, Italy, as clearly marked on the receiver. The Carcano series of rifles were originally developed in the late 19th century and used by Italian forces through both World Wars. This particular rifle is non-functional and offered purely as a collectible piece of Americana and Cash family history.
Finished with a worn hardwood stock and metal hardware, it shows classic arsenal marks including a star, crown, and inspector's proof stamps, along with serial number “248142.” While no longer operable, it remains a compelling display piece—especially due to its provenance as part of Johnny Cash’s personal collection.
This rifle likely dates from circa 1887 to 1918. Here's a breakdown:
Original Vetterli rifles were produced from 1870 to the late 1880s.
Many were converted to the M1870/87/15 Carcano configuration around 1915–1918 to support Italy’s needs during World War I, as the military transitioned to 6.5mm Carcano cartridges.
Because this rifle is marked "Brescia" and has the conversion proof marks and serial style, it's safe to estimate it was manufactured originally in the 1880s and converted around 1915–1918.
