Lot Description:

(From the Cindy Cash Collection)

One of the most iconic and defiant images in music history, this 1995 Jim Marshall print captures Johnny Cash mid-performance at San Quentin Prison in 1969 delivering his legendary middle finger gesture. This particular photographic print was given directly to Cindy Cash by famed photographer Jim Marshall, who acknowledged her role in helping this image become a lasting piece of American cultural history.

Though bearing Marshall's signature and the inscription "San Quentin - 1971 – Jim Marshall 1995," the signature appears to be part of the photographic print itself, not a hand-signed addition. It is printed on Kodak photographic paper and shows no evidence of ink indentation or variation, suggesting it is a lithographic or darkroom print with signature included in the plate.

Note, the photo was taken on Feb 24, 1969 so this release by Jim Marshall and given to Cindy Cash has the wrong date of 1971.

Cindy Cash’s close relationship with both her father and Jim Marshall adds provenance and unique historical significance to this piece. Whether displayed as art or preserved as a pop culture relic, this photograph remains a powerful symbol of rebellion and authenticity.

Appraiser’s Note:

This image is one of the most recognizable in American music history, made famous by Cindy Cash and Billboard Magazine, it feature's Jim Marshall’s candid capture of Johnny Cash’s defiant moment at San Quentin. While many modern reprints and authorized editions exist—including licensed versions signed by Marshall himself—this particular print holds unique weight due to its direct lineage. According to Cindy Cash, Marshall gave her this print personally in 1995, recognizing her role in popularizing the photo and preserving its legacy.

Though not hand-signed, the image features a printed signature and inscription typical of Marshall's darkroom or lithographic reproductions, many of which have been offered in galleries and limited editions. Authenticated Marshall prints of this image—particularly with personal provenance—can range from $1,500 to over $5,000, depending on format, print type, and signature style. The Cindy Cash connection adds significant intrinsic and emotional value that can raise collector interest and justify a higher estimate within that range.

Based on these factors, this item would be auction-estimated at $2,500–$5,000+.

Condition: Very good condition overall with minor edge wear. No creases or staining. Signature appears printed as part of the photographic process.

Dimensions: 10" x 7.5"

Auction Estimate: $2,500 - $5,000+

Provenance: From the Cindy Cash Collection and accompanied with a signed COA.

Thank you for joining us—it’s an honor to present this historic collection.
