Lot Description: Comes with frame not pictured here.. Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806) Kitagawa Utamaro emerged as a great artist later on in his life, an unusual trend that is common in many Ukiyo-e artists. Utamaro was known for his keenness of observation and delicacy of color printing in the field of nature study (Paine 266). He broke away from the symbolic naturalism of Chinese artists and his works reflected Japans naturalistic school of painters, the Maruyama. Utamaro had many innovations in his career, including creating double sided prints, giving an identical front and back view of women. Other innovations by Utamaro were outlining women in pink, to give a look of real flesh and using mica grounds. He is considered the greatest artist of womanhood during this time, because he was able to portray the beauty of all women in his work, rather than just focusing on famous women who were easily recognizable. In his series of prints, the Pyhsiognomies of Women (1794), Utamaro began exploring the moods of women, a topic that at this point had been ignored. Utamaro also began creating prints that delved into the relationship between mothers and their babies. Later on in his life Utamaro began producing prints on great Japanese families. This type of work was avoided by almost all artists and landed Utamaro in prison for a short stay, because at this time it was illegal to use the names and crests of prominent people and families.
