Lot Description:

Large Orthoceras Fossil Plate; Morocco – Approx. 3 ft Display Specimen w/ Stand

A dramatic and visually striking fossil slab densely packed with well-defined Orthoceras fossils preserved within a contrasting limestone matrix. These long, torpedo-shaped fossils represent extinct straight-shelled cephalopods that thrived in ancient seas hundreds of millions of years ago. Morocco is one of the most famous localities for these remarkable fossils, where Devonian marine sediments preserved large concentrations of Orthoceras in beautiful display formations.

This specimen features dozens of elongated Orthoceras shells preserved in various orientations, creating a striking natural pattern across the surface of the slab. The fossils display excellent chamber segmentation, with distinctive banding and internal structure clearly visible due to careful cutting and polishing. The rich contrast between the dark fossilized shells and the lighter surrounding matrix enhances the visual impact, making this piece both scientifically interesting and highly decorative.

Large plates such as this are highly sought after for interior décor, natural history collections, and educational displays. The slab is accompanied by a metal display stand (not shown), allowing it to be presented upright as an impressive natural history statement piece.
