Lot Description:

From the Carney Estate

The Story Behind the Estate of Jim and Carol Carney
This collection comes from the estate of Jim and Carol Carney, a Minnesota couple whose 68-year marriage carried them from St. Paul, where they grew up, to Maplewood, where they raised their family, and eventually to their year-round home on South Lindstrom Lake.
Carol brought plenty of personality and sparkle to their life together. In 1971, she became the first Klondike Kate of the St. Paul Winter Carnival. She loved people, a good story, and the excitement of casinos—especially Las Vegas. Along the way, Jim carefully saved pieces of those adventures, including casino player cards, decks of playing cards, and ashtrays, some from hotels that no longer exist.
Jim spent more than 40 years working on the railroad, advancing from Carman to General Foreman through the Great Northern, Burlington Northern, and ultimately BNSF railroads. He was also a veteran and paratrooper during the Korean War. A thoughtful and organized collector, Jim preserved memorabilia reflecting his railroad career, military service, travels, and other interests.
Together, Jim and Carol built a life rich with family, tradition, travel, stories, and treasured keepsakes. Their daughter, Lori—Miss Shamrock 1979—is now offering these belongings in the hope that their history will live on with collectors and new owners who appreciate the character behind them.
The estate includes an eclectic mix of contemporary, vintage, collectible, and harder-to-find pieces, with connections to railroad history, military service, casinos and travel, Irish heritage, and everyday life across decades. More than simply objects, many of these items are small pieces of a well-lived Minnesota story.
