Original Confederate State of Virginia 50-cent Treasury Note dated February 17, 1864, issued at Richmond during the American Civil War. This fractional currency note was authorized to help provide small-denomination money during the severe coin shortage experienced throughout the Confederacy.
The note features a central portrait of John Letcher, Governor of Virginia from 1860β1864, flanked by large 50 Cents denomination devices. The left border states that the note was issued under an Act authorizing the Treasury to issue notes in denominations of less than five dollars. It bears serial number 105256 and period handwritten signatures.
