The S-2 Steam Turbine Type 6-8-6 Locomotive No. 671 was based on a prototype built by the Pennsylvania Railroad. This engine was deemed inefficient by this railroad and they only made one of them. However, in the "euphoria" of post-war toy train production, Lionel made thousands of them!

This locomotive did not have magnetraction and the tenders came with staple-end trucks with one electronic coupler.

This, and other early Lionel Post War locomotives like the No. 726, and No. 2020 used a special heat lamp, No. 671-75, as the smoke unit. These smoke units would only work with the No. 196 Smoke Pellets. Beginning in 1947 Lionel would replace these smoke units with the more commonly found heat coil that used the SP Pellets. With these later issues of these locomotives Lionel included a tag that advised the purchaser to use SP Smoke Pellets instead of the No. 196 that was used on earlier issues.

The Operating Coal Unloading Car No. 3469 would unload coal into the line side bins with the use of a No. 6019 or UCS track section. This opeating car would replace the No. 3459 in 1949, and would continue in production until 1955. It is of all metal construction, with the top dump bin made out of aluminum that is painted BLACK with WHITE heat-stamped lettering, and it has brake wheels on each end.

During the years that it was being produced this car was a frequent set component. The boxes that were used for these cars have an "X" suffix to the number, were smaller in size, and did not contain a No. 160 track side unloading bin.

Lionel would initally paint these cars EGGSHELL WHITE and would offer an improved mechanism on what was used previously on the No. 3462. There are four variations:

Variation A: EGGSHELL WHITE body and short metal roof hatch that is painted to match the body color. This variation has aluminum doors. (1949)

Variation B: same as (A) but has a body that is unpainted WHITE plastic.

All of the O Gauge sets issued in 1948 have electronic couplers and came with an RCS Uncoupling Track section. This Hopper Car’s O27 Gauge equivalent in listed under the No. 6456. There is no difference between these cars except for the changed number.

This car is listed in the Production Table as Variation A of the Type I body that has WHITE heat-stamped lettering and came with Type 3b staple-end trucks with electronic couplers. Shows the number "25000" on the sides of the car.

The Lionel Lackawanna Fairbanks-Morse Trainmaster No. 2321 would be available from 1954 until 1956. This was the first of the Fairbanks-Morse Trainmasters and it would be produced on a GRAY body with YELLOW trim and a MAROON side stripe and heat-stamped lettering. This body was screwed on to the chassis at the ends where body cracks are frequently found around these screws.

This diesel was equipped with Magnetraction, interior lights at both ends, dual vertical worm drive motors, horn, three position directional unit that is adjustable from the bottom, and operating disc couplers at both ends. Note the flanges on the wheels on the inner axles are missing. This is so that this engine could negotiate the tight radius of Lionel’s O Gauge track. This engine will not operate on O27 Gauge track.

The Lionel SP Type Caboose No. 2357 was the first version of the SP Type caboose and featured many details that would later be removed to reduce production costs. Lionel added different enhanced features to this caboose that have resulted in many rare variations. The first issue has the brake wheels mounted on the inside of the chassis railings, a configuration that would later cause Lionel difficulty in assembling this caboose. Later issues of this caboose would have the brake wheels on the outside of the railings.

Produced on a Die 1 or 2 body, this caboose is typically found with heat-stamped lettering, a BLACK painted chassis and battery boxes, two ladders, two brake wheels, staple-end trucks with two electronic coil couplers. First produced in 1947, this caboose would be available for one additional year.
